The Correa family lived in McAllen, Texas before coming to Tyler in 1964. When the restaurant they owned was forced to close due to tough economic times, they moved to Tyler and founded the Tyler Tortilla Factory. Their new business let them meet the demand for good Mexican food from Tyler's growing population of Mexican immigrants. For years, Mr. Correa would travel to Dallas to buy Mexican products that were not available to the Hispanic community here in Tyler. During the weekend much of the Hispanic community would wait for the yellow station wagon to come by their neighborhood streets. Customers anticipated the delivery of their tortillas and sweet bread. Mr. Correa would run a route that became routine through the district of the Hispanic community. For years, Mr. Correa would travel to Dallas to buy Mexican products that were not available to the Hispanic community here in Tyler. Soon, his route became so highly anticipated that each weekend much of the Hispanic community would wait for his yellow station wagon to come by their neighborhood streets and deliver the tortillas and sweet breads they so enjoyed. The Inspiration for the Tyler Tortillas Factory began in 1979 when Mrs. Correa decided it was becoming too overwhelming for Mr. Correa to continue delivering merchandise door to door. In time, Momma Correa convinced him to open a new business in Tyler, a business that became the Tyler Tortillas Factory. The Grand Opening was held in April 1986. They began their business by making corn tortillas. Later, the Correas added flour tortillas, chips, salsas and the now famous tamales. Mrs. Correa is dedicated to the company that her husband, whom passed away in 2001, helped create. The Tyler Tortillas Factory is presently co-owned by Mrs. Correa and her daughter and son-in-law, James & Araceli Wiley. In 2005, the business became incorporated. The Tyler Tortillas Factory continues to thrive and serve wonderful delicious Mexican products to all the people of East Texas. |
